LUKE DANIELS 'TRIBUTE TO WILLIAM HANNAH'
William Hannah (1891 – 1961) was born in the mining village of Blackburn, West Lothian. Having started on the mouth organ as a boy, he became well known as Scotland’s premiere melodeon player by the end of the First World War, during which he served in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. His role in the development of the modern accordion was an important one. William Hannah was a prolific recording artist with companies such as Parlophone and Columbia, and a celebrated band leader in the 1920s. He was a major influence on Jimmy Shand, although the man and his contribution to Scottish music have been largely forgotten.
The album features Luke Daniels (melodeon), Neil Ewart (fiddle), Ian Carr (guitar) and John Paul Gandy (piano). The music throughout the album is outstanding.
Painstakingly transcribed from early 78rpm and wax cylinder recordings, Hannah’s exciting music and exceptional playing has been faithfully reproduced by four of the UK’s finest traditional players. A Wilkinson Excelsior c1927 (Hannah’s own signature instrument) was restored specially and played on this recording along with an earlier model used by Daniel and Peter Wyper c1909.
The assistance of Theo Gibb, accordion repairer and restorer, Ian Cruickshank, band leader and accordionist, Charlie Todd of Peebles Box & Fiddle Club and archivist, Bob Witney and Josh Dickson of the Royal Conservatoire Scotland all contributed significantly to the project. The financial assistance of Creative Scotland is also acknowledged.
The album was recorded at the Royal Conservatoire Scotland, produced by Luke Daniels, and mixed and mastered by Bob Witney. The sleeve design is by Gael Music and Designfolk.
A wonderful tribute to Hannah.

LUNA BLANCA - 'PIRATES BAY'
T: 03 5883 9221
rPirates Bay - reviewed by Kathy Parsons (MainlyPiano.com)
Pirates Bay is the latest musical confection from the German Nouveau Flamenco group, Luna Blanca. Helmed by classical guitarist Richard Hecks and co-written with pianist/organist Helmut Graebe, Luna Blanca has become one of the most popular World Music bands on the planet. Their 2012 release, El Dorado, was the recipient of the Best World Album award by Zone Music Reporter for that year, and it’s likely that Pirates Bay will receive similar accolades and recognition. In addition to outstanding performances, this music overflows with joy, adventure, and a strong sense of fun. In addition to Hecks and Graebe, Luna Blanca includes Bino Dola on rhythm and lead guitar and Clemens Paskert on bass, percussion and keyboards. Guest artists are Uwe Gronau on organ on two tracks, Davina-Carolin on piano on one track, and Gundy and Davina-Carolin the singing mermaids on the only track that includes vocals. A few pieces include nature and other sounds to further illustrate the story.

Cathie O'Sullivan returned to the stage at the 2015 National Folk Festival after far too many years as Dr Catherine Summerhayes, senior lecturer in Film & New Media Studies at the Australian National University..
A long time member of Warren Fahey's Larrikins and her own innovative ensemble, Summerhaze, Cathie was a familiar voice on ABC radio singing her beautiful interpretations of Australian ballads like 'Artesian Waters' and 'As Stock Goes By' alongside her self-penned compositions like 'Cameron Quarterman' and 'Silly Winds' . Cathie has dusted off her Celtic harp and revisited her favourite songs for a long overdue return. To celebrate Cathie O'Sullivan's contribution to Australian music Rouseabout Records has released two compilations Silly Winds and Down By The Green Bushes.
The Australian Folk band Kamerunga’s music derives from traditional Celtic-influenced Australian folk music, mixing elements of rock, reggae, jazz and blues. They produce eclectic and unusual versions full of zip and zest of recognisable tunes. Extensive info about the band and each of the songs

"If awards were handed out for consistency and excellence, Michael Fix's trophy room would be overflowing with ARIA gongs for best instrumental albums"
- Tony Hillier (Rhythms magazine)
"His interpretations of other people's tunes have a fresh individuality about them, while his own compositions draw on diverse influences to create a personal uniqueness that is easy to listen to, but hard to reproduce.
His fingerpicking is flawless, his sense of rhythm is completely controlled...
... Michael has an instrumental voice that is both a challenge to other guitarists and completely enjoyable to everyone." - Steve Henderson (Guitarist Australia Magazine)

Get Troy talking about Freedom Ride, and prepare yourself for a journey, literally as well as musically.
“I had an empty canvas sitting at home and wanted to paint an interesting picture for everyone with songs. I loved co-writing with old friends again on this album and the themes we looked at stretched from one end of the country to another. There are a lot of people’s lives woven through these tunes and I hope they use this collection of songs as a mirror and see themselves in a few of the stories I’ve touched on.
There are many modes of transport but my favourite one is music so jump in with me for a small journey all aboard the “Freedom Ride”.

FAVOURITE SCOTTISH SONGS
Favourite Scottish Songs (Celtic Collections vol 16)
11 tracks: A Man’s A Man For A’ That (Sheena Wellington) * The Freedom Come All Ye (Jim Reid) * Ae Fond Kiss (Rod Paterson) * Follow The Heron (Karine Polwart) * My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose (Davy Steele) * In Freendship’s Name (Gordeanna McCulloch) * Sae Will We Yet (Tony Cuffe) * Both Sides The Tweed (Dick Gaughan) * Sic A Parcel of Rogues In A Nation (Fiona Forbes) * Scotland’s Story (Tom Lawrie) * Auld Lang Syne (The Cast).
For a’ the bairns and awbuddie else.
For all the children and everybody else.
This album is the result of discussion between Scottish piper and pipe-maker Hamish Moore and Ian Green about the need for a CD of ‘favourite Scottish songs’ to be available in Scottish schools - a collection that would be a simple tool for teachers to introduce Scotland’s rich song heritage to their pupils.
Much thought was put into the selection of songs for this compilation. We feel the final selection fits all the criteria and if Scottish children left school knowing at least these songs we would be well satisfied. It is hoped, however, that introduction to these eleven songs might encourage some, if not all children, to investigate further.
In compiling the album it became clear to both Hamish and Ian that this was a collection which would have interest for a’ the bairns and awbuddie (everybody) else so the album will also be on general release through retail outlets, in addition to being made available to Scottish schools.
Burns’ most popular songs - A Man’s A Man, Ae Fond Kiss, My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose, Sic A Parcel O’ Rogues In A Nation and of course Auld Lang Syne, are included and it is interesting to note that the first is Sheena Wellington’s live performance at the opening of the Scottish Parliament in 1999, while the latter is the version by The Cast of this internationally acclaimed song, which became part of the soundtrack of the film Sex And The City.
The other three Burns’ songs are by Rod Paterson, the late Davy Steele and Fiona Forbes respectively, giants of Scottish song. Hamish Henderson’s The Freedom Come All Ye, often suggested as a possible candidate for Scotland’s National Anthem, is sung by the late Jim Reid, while Dick Gaughan’s Both Sides The Tweed, an invitation to live in peace and harmony with our English neighbours, is now a classic.
Karine Polwart’s Follow The Heron was only written in 2002 but has already entered the Scottish song tradition, as has The Proclaimers’ Scotland’s Story, sung by Tom Lawrie. In Freendship’s Name and Sae Will We Yet are traditional songs to be found in many collections and sung here by two fine interpreters of traditional song: Gordeanna McCulloch and the late Tony Cuffe.
This is a mighty collection of favourite Scottish songs, widely recorded and to be found in the repertoire of many singers, performed here by some of Scotland’s finest.
“Wowser! The Favourite Scottish Songs compilation is a brammer. What a mega compilation this is. Powerful and meaningful Scots sangs superbly delivered by great Scots singers. The intrinsic spirit and emotion of these songs has been given full expression in the beautifully articulated lyrics taen fae oor ain guid Scots tongue. Yoos twa lauds, yersel and Hamish Moore, shid be weel plaised wi yer wark. Yiv din a grand joab pittin this the gither.”

Urban folk roots country blues...
English born, Sydney based singer-songwriter, Mark Lucas has played many roles in the past 30 odd years. Arriving in Australia in 1981 with a trunk full of belongings and an old Martin guitar, he has been variously a banana farm hand, insurance broker, Native American arts trader, worked in movies and bars, and even found time to establish one of Sydney’s favourite small venues, Petersham Bowling Club (the pbc); but always at heart he’s followed the muse wherever it leads, from late ‘70’s South London roots rock, to quirky ‘80’s pop/rock, and returning full circle to the narrative heart of the troubadour.
New album “Little Town Blues” (Laughing Outlaw Records LOR174CD), co-produced with Brendan Gallagher (Karma County, Jimmy Little), sees Mark step out from in front of long-time backing band the Dead Setters to work a distinctly personal seam, drawing from both the confessional and the observational.
Whilst an Americana, country/roots feel prevails, Mark’s songwriting comes from a strong spirit of place, from a soul born wandering the heartworn highways, and in this, his sixtieth year, he’s clearly right at home.
‘Little Town Blues’ is released June 1 & available from Laughing Outlaw Records, itunes etc.
“…an exemplary example of Australian songwriting, full of beautifully restrained playing and honest lyrics.” – Chris Familton, The Music
