DARSHAN AMBIENT 'SONGS FROM THE DEEP FIELD'

One of the most famous images captured by the Hubble Space Telescope covers only a tiny speck of the sky, and yet it reveals a bewildering assortment of galaxies at various stages of stellar evolution. This mesmerizing image, known as the “Hubble Deep Field,” is the inspiration for Darshan Ambient’s eighth Spotted Peccary release, Songs From The Deep Field – eleven tracks of layered pulses, melodic vibrances, and foundational grooves that evoke a human expression of awe-inspiring vastness that stretches the very fabric of imagination.

Songs From The Deep Field – running just over an hour – builds and releases layer upon layer, ranging from pure space to kinetic free fall; from weightless drift to rhythmic power.  Filtered throughout the album are passages that bear resemblance to the works of Patrick O’Hearn, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Jonn Serrie, and other pioneers of ambient space music, all orbiting around a core comprised of the complex layers and familiar atmospheres of Darshan Ambient’s enticing sensibilities. The result is a heavenly blend of ambient synth textures, lush guitar loops, pulsing strings, driving rhythms, electronics, and poignant melodies; a beautiful array of ambient electronic instrumentation that reaches for the stars and beyond.

While the far reaches of space may appear vast and endless, there is a unique design that allows the elements and regions to interact with great precision; development, deconstruction, birth and disappearance, all in the flash of an eye.  In similar fashion, each track on Songs From The Deep Field is complete unto itself, yet the expansive shapes and moving passages of these indelibly unique compositions all spiral together on the album into a cohesive expression of the artists deep inspiration.

To fully embrace the universe is to surrender to the fragility that underlies the immense power and force that unites us all, and Songs From The Deep Field is a heartfelt tribute to the limitless mysteries of the cosmos.

PAUL AVGERINOS 'BHAKTI'

BHAKTI by Paul Avgerinos

Bhakti is love – loving God, loving your own self, and loving all beings.  - Amma

Paul Avgerinos : "Although I was brought up in the Greek Orthodox Church, I became a student of a Bhakti yoga guru from India when I was 16. All my life I have practiced yoga, meditation, chanting and devotional singing. For the last 20 years I have also been very active in a small Christian church near my home, singing and praying there. Increasingly I have been drawn to blend the most personally meaningful aspects of Bhakti yoga and Christianity together in a harmony of pure divine love. With devotion, gratitude and joy I offer you this album, BHAKTI."

ALEX HODGSON 'THE BRIG TAE NAE WHERE'

The Brig Tae Nae Where (The Bridge To Nowhere) is the second Greentrax album by the Prestonpans singer Alex Hodgson. Twelve tracks on this album were written by Alex, plus one each by Robert Burns and Ewan MacColl.

This new album is based on family memories of summer days past, some spent at Belhaven Bay near Dunbar. It takes a different approach from his debut album and touches on a nautical theme which weaves its spell through traditional and original material.

His previous album Jeelie Jars ‘n’ Coalie Backies was released in 2010 and received fabulous reviews and attention globally, whilst also making its way into The Queen’s own music collection.

Born, raised and still residing in Prestonpans, East Lothian, it’s no wonder Alex’s songwriting has been influenced by his surroundings. Just a stone’s throw away from the famous Jacobite battlefield, along with the many other captivating landmarks around East Lothian, he has never been short of inspiration. Full to the brim with stories, history and myths, his fascination of his home town’s past has been captured and shared with us in his poignant song writing capabilities.

Alex achieved high acclaim on the folk stage as a Scottish singer/songwriter after twice winning Burnsong, an international competition held to celebrate the art and power behind composing a song. The competition also led him to represent Scotland in Toronto, Canada, at Folk Alliance 2012, within a new band named Kilmarnock Edition which is made up entirely of Burnsong contestants, including the fine Gaelic singer Fiona J Mackenzie.

Alex is a hugely popular singer and entertainer in Scotland and has on several occasions sung for the Queen at Balmoral Castle. He has also sung at the Scottish Parliament, on BBC Radio Scotland and further afield in South Africa and Malaysia. He has appeared in many amateur stage presentations and also has a great interest in storytelling. An all-round professional with a huge following, particularly in lowland Scotland.

The eye-catching front cover painting is by Alex himself.

WARREN FAHEY & LUKE WEBB 'THE WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN'

Warren Fahey & Luke Webb with Marcus Holden & Garry Steel - 'The World Turned Upside Down' RRR63

Australia has been blessed with minerals. It has been our saving grace and curse for centuries. The gold-rush of the mid-19th century changed Australia forever adding well-over a million people in just two decades. It was also important socially as the gold diggers forged an independent working spirit that became a major part of who we are as a people.

In 2013 cultural historian, Warren Fahey, published an ebook under the title of The World Turned Upside-Down and in this companion album wanted to show the influence of American minstrel music and parodies on our gold songs and folksong tradition.

The album contains over 70 minutes of music & features Luke Webb on banjo, guitar and vocals, Marcus Holden playing fiddle, mandolin, cello, guitar and keyboard, Garry Steel on accordion virtuoso and piano, Elsen Price on bass whilst Warren Fahey sings and plays concertina. The CD and digital download also contains comprehensive booklet notes.

The World Turned Upside-Down is a solid contribution to the understanding of the social history related to the Australian gold rush era.

The World Turned Upside Down (RRR63) is OUT June 13th digitally through iTunes and on CD through MGM Distribution or directly from Undercover Music via mail order.

DEEPERNET 'IMPOSSIBLE LANDSCAPE'

DeeperNET, the high-energy electronic project of Portland, OR based musician Andrew Miles, presents Impossible Landscape, the project’s second full length release on the Spotted Peccary sub label O3E. This intricate, powerful electronic soundscape pulses and probes with mesmerizing detail, provoking abstract senses of terra firma on alien worlds.

From downtempo grooves to lush ambient meditations and washed-out acoustic elements, this cross genre release deftly weaves haunting melodies and motives across more viscous atmospheres of custom crafted software and hardware instruments, only occasionally extracted by the very organic dream-like vocals of guest artist ZEFORA.

Impossible Landscape begins with “Aether” which is a departure from last year’s One.  Exploring new grounds of IDM, and downtempo, the album still retains sonic signatures of DeeperNET’s sound.  Powerful synth layers and sequences fade into wild and complex rhythms which pull the listener in to the second track, “Fractal Dimension.”  The soft touches of ambient build to extreme moments of climax, a journey seamlessly choreographed into a multiverse of sounds.  “Fluid In Blue” unveils the ethereal voice of ZEFORA on yet another complex expansion of acoustic and synthetic instruments, and crafted sound design.  Impossible Landscape keeps its vast momentum until the last moments of “Quantum Teleportation,” a true finale to a dynamic and masterful ambient electronic album.

A work in progress that spans many years, Impossible Landscape represents a destination achieved where alien tapestries synthesize with our human experience.

'FOR FREEDOM ALONE - THE WARS OF INDEPENDENCE'

2014 is the 700th Anniversary of The Battle of Bannockburn and Greentrax marks this important event with this compilation of songs, music and a poem by many of Scotland’s finest artists. 2014 is also the year of The Scottish Referendum and the album recognises this historical event. The title of the album For Freedom Alone is taken from The Declaration Of Arbroath, a portion of which is included on the album.

There are a total of eighteen tracks on the album, sixteen of which relate to the relevant historical period, plus two bonus tracks. Eight tracks are licensed from other companies, nine were specially recorded for the album and only three items are from the Greentrax/Culburnie labels. Fifteen tracks feature the Wars Of Independence and the exploits of William Wallace and Robert The Bruce. Wallace’s famous victory at Stirling Brig and his overwhelming defeat at Falkirk are the subjects of two songs, and of course The Battle of Bannockburn features in several.

Tracks include contributions from The Corries (the adopted National Anthem of Scotland Flower of Scotland and The Black Douglas), The McCalmans (The Lion Wallace Saw), Alastair McDonald (The Battle of Stirling Brig from an old Nevis recording and William Wallace, Knight Of Elderslie of more recent origin), Alasdair Fraser with Skyedance (Bannockburn) and Arthur Johnstone (the classic Burns song Scots Wha Hae).

Also specially recorded: Sylvia Barnes & Sandy Stanage (Lament For Wallace After The Battle of Falkirk and The Field of Bannockburn), Alex Hodgson (The Sword of Bannockburn and an Ian McCalman original written specially for this album, titled New Day), Robin Laing (Bruce at Bannockburn, dealing with the killing of Henry De Bohun by Robert the Bruce before the battle proper), Ian Bruce (De Bruce, De Bruce - a poem put to music by Ian McCalman) and George Archibald (Bruce’s Address To His Captains, part of John Barbour’s epic poem put to music by Ian McCalman).

Iain Anderson reads the humorous The Spiders Legend Of Robert The Bruce and a shortened version of The Declaration Of Arbroath.

Bonus tracks: The Referendum by Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas, and the classic Both Sides The Tweed by Dick Gaughan, which we felt was important to redress any perceived imbalance - with its lines “Let friendship and honour unite, and flourish on both sides the Tweed”.

The very informative historical sleeve notes are by Jim Paris and the artwork design is by John Slavin, both deserve special mention. Ian McCalman provided many ideas, in addition to his production and musical work, and he contributed immensely to the album. The inclusion of the reproduction of the painting of The Black Douglas is included by kind permission of Ronnie Browne and The Duke of Hamilton. Ronnie’s painting hangs in Lennoxlove House.

JOHN LYELL 'REFLECTION OF TIME'

Reflection of Time is the 5th CD (and 3rd Solo release) from John Lyell, an artist who is steeped in the subconsciousness of today's ambient elctronic music.

The follow up CD to his last commercial release Eternity (2012), Reflection of Time is a predominantly Atmospheric - Space Music Experience that has a mixture of soft rhythmic pulse elements and drifting Space Music pieces.

Definitely soothing, atmospheric background music would be a good description of this new release by John. You will hear some shades of past releases in these compositions but there are some musical departures as well.

This synthesizer based Atmospheric and Space Music mix was composed, performed, engineered and produced by John at his project studio in Minneapolis, MN (USA).
