EDITORIAL by JOHN WEEKS
Well, a lot has happened in the last week. Over the weekend my life was filled with musical experiences. On Saturday I attended a Supper Dance in Belgrave (Victoria) featuring an 18-piece swing band named The DR Big Band (see photo below). What an amazing jazz band. I felt like being pushed back in time with the amazing sounds of Benny Goodman, Cole Porter and other fabulous artists. The event supported Oxfam Australia with most proceeds going to assist the victims of the Pakinstan floods.
On Sunday I joined radio presenter Big Pete to two country music events, Doug Bruce & The Tailgaters in concert at the Hallam Hotel (Victoria) AND later to the Rod Laver Arena to see US country artist Tim McGraw in concert. You can view my photos of each of these acts by clicking on these website addresses : 1. www.spectrumfmradio.org/dougbruce.htm 2. www.spectrumfmradio.org/timmcgraw.htm Tim McGraw has been doing concerts throughout Australia during the week receiving full acclaim and appreciation. The feedback through the Press and social networks has all been positive, and rightly so! And, as a side issue, the feedback and viewing of my Tim McGraw photos has been wonderful (see details further down this newsletter). Also a big thanks to Big Pete for getting the Tim McGraw concert tickets.
Smiley Grahame's health has been improving immensely since his neck operation some weeks ago. He is furiously working on his car so that he can come to the radio studio to present the Saturday Morning Country Show unfortunately however he will not be available to present the show tomorrow.
Speaking about this Saturday morning, I will be interviewing country music artist, Jason Lee, on the Community Outlook program at 9am E.S.T.
Ann Creber says in her latest website column ( www.spectrumfmradio.org/anncreber.htm ) : I am looking forward to have George Field with us this Monday. George is a veteran cinema projectionist, who has been involved over many years with cinemas in Britain and for a very long time with the Healesville Cinema. We will be chatting about the great film musicals and we would love you to have your input! Tell us which musicals you loved and why. You can send me an email at home provence@bluedandenongs.com.au or phone the studio 03 5958 2727 on Monday afternoon between 4 p.m. and 4.45 p.m.
Don't forget that you can hear the Good Life program online (as well as our other shows) by accessing www.3mdr.com live streaming. The Good Life with Ann Creber (and me) Mondays - 15:00 - 17:00

CD REPORT : SACRED LOVE by SHAMBHU
Sacred Love is a soul-elevating journey through music into the deep recesses of your heart. Featuring beautiful songs and soul-stirring performances by guitarist Shambhu, the recording reflects an austerity and sonic perfection thanks to Grammy Award winners Will Ackerman (co-producer) and Corin Nelsen (recording and mix engineer).
Common Ground magazine reviewer Lloyd Barde called Sacred Love, “Possibly the best project Will Ackerman has ever been involved in! One of the best of the year (or any year!)”
Steve Sisgold, author of What’s Your Body Telling You, wrote, “When I listened to Sacred Love, almost instantly I was transported to a deep and very profound place within, full of bright light and peace"
A legendary producer of contemporary instrumental music, Will Ackerman worked closely with Shambhu on creating the ‘essence’ for most songs on the CD through Shambhu’s guitar performances that form the heart of the recordings. Corin Nelsen delivered a sonic masterpiece as recording and mix engineer, so audiophiles rejoice: this is an awesome sounding record on virtually any speakers or headsets.
Sacred Love features legendary performances by an all-star cast of musicians, including: Tony Levin on bass (tours with Peter Gabriel), George Brooks on sax (recorded with John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, and Larry Coryell), Ravichandra Kulur on flute (tours with Ravi Shakar and Anoushka Shankar), cellist Eugene Friesen (plays with Paul Winter Consort), Jeff Haynes on percussion (toured with Pat Metheny), Celso Alberti on drums (toured with Stevie Winwood), Todd Boston on sarod, Jill Haley on English horn, Premik Tubbs on flute (toured with John McLaughlin and Santana), Jeff Oster on flugelhorn, singers Noah Wilding and Claytoven Richardson, and many other amazing artists.
Sacred Love is A Soundtrack for Your Life

Tracks from Sacred Love by Shambhu can be heard on the Spectrum radio program (Saturday morning at 10am E.S.T. ( - also streaming online via 3MDR's website www.3mdr.com )
MICHAEL MOORE, DOCUMENTARY FILM MAKER
Michael Moore to Receive the John Steinbeck Award
The family of John Steinbeck, the Nobel Prize-winning author of "The Grapes of Wrath" and other American classics, and the Center for Steinbeck Studies, have announced that they are giving their prestigious John Steinbeck Award to Michael Moore. They're making their official announcement today and I thought you'd like to see the statement they've released to the press. Steinbeck's son, Thomas, will present the award to Mike next month at a ceremony at San Jose State University (the public is invited to attend). Thomas Steinbeck had this to say this morning: "Michael Moore is a courageous man and a great selection for the John Steinbeck Award. My father would have loved him; my father was the Michael Moore of his time."

JASON LEE
Following his dual finalist berth in Toyota Star Maker and graduating from the 2006 CMAA Australian College of Country Music, Jason Lee has been building a strong base and steadily working towards the release of his new album.
Jason's first single A Memory, a pre-release for the new album, has given the Sydney based singer/songwriter some well earned respect on the Australian country music scene, topping the country charts in Queensland at #1, Country Music Channel at #16 and the Country Tracks Top 30 at #18.
Up A Creek is the second single release from his debut long anticipated album Better Late Than Never. It's a tongue-in-cheek track about how some men can act when falling in-love with the girl of their dreams which leaves them feeling "up a creek" without p.p.p paddle.
www.jasonlee.com.au
Jason Lee will be interviewed by John Weeks this Saturday morning on Community Outlook at 9am e.s.t.

Possibly the best tour guide of Australia ever produced is The Australian Tour Guide edited by Melissa Krafchek. It covers details of distances, information on over 700 towns, accommodation guide, details of festivals and events and pretty much anything else a traveller could need! I'll be speaking with Melissa. Meantime, you can check it out on their website: www.exploreaustralia.net.au

THE PIGS
Message from Scott Bradburn, member of the country music band, The Pigs :
The Hey Christina video is now complete, on the web and on it's way to your TV Screens! Watch The Pigs' New Single, Hey Christina : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeKlDUKkxhE
We invited fans from our mailing list to be a part of our video clip. You just need to watch it to see how much fun everybody had on the night of the shoot!
It's the first time we've released a single, with funny lyrics and if the reaction from our live performances is any indication, people are going to have a really good chuckle when listening to this original song. Last weekend at the Gympie Muster, we received wonderful responses and feedback about the song from crowds in the Crow Bar, The Muster Club and as part of the ABC Saturday Night Country Live Broadcast.
Hey Christina arrived on a separate CD Single, as part of the August NFS Distribution. We're really excited about this one and hope you love it as much as we do! Thanks For Your Time,
Scott Bradburn, The Pigs, www.thepigs.com.au

John Weeks will be interviewing Scott Bradburn tomorrow on the program Community Outlook at 9.30am

RANGES BURRINJA FOLK CLUB Presents Christina Green & friends - Friday 24th September 2010 - performing with STAX, Tracey Roberts & Michelle Chandler
Melbourne-based performer Christina Green is one of the best songwriter-composers to come out of the Australian folk scene in recent years. She plays locally and at various festivals in Victoria, as well as making appearances in Canada and the UK. A two-month Canadian stint including a residency as a composer-performer at the Banff Centre was a highlight of 2009, building on the successful launch of her most recent CD, Sitting On Saturna. Drawing on a wide range of musical influences, her songs convey stories, observations and experiences with polished lyrics and guitar work, strong images and storytelling and a spaciousness that allows the characters to speak for themselves. Her sets also often include a selection from her repertoire of jazz/world-flavoured short instrumental pieces. Currently she is developing ongoing collaborations with a diverse group of musicians mostly based in the Dandenong Ranges and is delighted to be joined by three of these artists, Tracey Roberts, Michelle Chandler and Stax the Didgeman, for this appearance at Ranges Burrinja Folk.

The Good Life - Live-to-air Interviews : This Monday 3pm - 5pm - Ann Creber says ........
Next week's program promises to be a ripper .. fingers crossed, as three of our guests are overseas' authors here for the Festival and will be staying in hotels.... always a bit "iffy" getting put through to them! However, I am HOPING to speak with American Joe Bageant, whose book Deer Hunting with Jesus became a best seller and to whom we spoke on his last visit here. His new book is called Rainbow Pie and consists of boyhood memories, as well, of course, as the strong political and social comments for which he has become famous on his weekly website blog.
I also hope to speak with R.J, Ellory, internationally admired best selling author of crime novels. Although he lives in England himself, his current book is set in New York - as I believe most of his books are. I found this latest book, entitled Saints of New York, just too engrossing to put down.
I'm looking forward to speaking with him.
Another guest from USA is Lin Oliver, co-author with Henry Winkler (AKA THE FONZ), of a series of books about a 10-year old "under achiever". It seems they met when their children were at school together and Henry confessed that as a child, he has been regarded as an under-achiever himself. These are lovely little books, with a really endearing little kid as hero, and I am recommending them for young readers.
Again, hopefully, I'll also speak with Michael Lawriwsky, who has written a comprehensive book about the post-war life of VC hero Jacka and the disillusionment many of our soldiers faced after the war. A big book, a big read and compulsory reading for anyone interested in our wartime history and our heroes. Thus book follows the original biography entitled Hard Jacka and is entitled Return of The Gallipoli Legend Jacka VC.

AFRO CELT SOUND SYSTEM - CAPTURE: AFRO CELT SOUND SYSTEM 1995-2010 - CDRW179 2CD
REAL WORLD RECORDS Afro Celt Sound System were the perfect storm: a phenomenon whose confluence of elements swept you away on a journey of light and shade, delicacy and power. When they added diverse new touches – Indian bhangra, Arabic influences, dub reggae & more – they did so seamlessly, in ways that only enhanced their sound and emphasised their openness. A supergroup whose line-up expanded and evolved around four core members (Simon Emmerson, James McNally, Iarla O’Lionaird, Martin Russell), the Afro Celt’s pan-global sound redefined dance music and stumped music critics. This specially re-mastered 2CD compilation features cuts from the collectives 5 critically acclaimed studio albums.

I hope you will consider, and book. Supper is included, but byo drinks and nibbles please. We have prizes for best dressed (Op Shop Glam theme), and silent movies will be screening just for fun. You can be seated with your own group or with new, interesting people.
Most importantly, profits support Oxfam’s emergency fund for sanitation assistance in the Pakistan floods. I hope to see some friends there. Warm regards, Judy Wolff
