LED ZEPPELIN IN AUSTRALIA

AUSTRALIA

I received a fascinating letter from a Led Zeppelin fan, Chris Furey, who allowed me to post his photos that he had taken of the 1972 Led Zeppelin concert at Kooyong Stadium (outside Melbourne, Victoria, Australia).

--------------------------

Chris writes ….

Hi John,

I have many colour photos I took at that concert which I have previously provided to LedZeppelin.com. I had filed them away for more than 35 years before I located them again quite by accident, in a shoebox I was about to throw away after all that time and several house moves. I am happy to share some of them with you now and you may re-publish them on your blog with photo credit attribution to Chris Furey.

I was 19 then, 63 now so its best that they are seen and not hidden away. I was seated about 5 rows back from the stage, on the aisle at stage right that day and had my camera with me quite by chance. There was no problem walking right up to the barriers in front of the stage to take the shots and I even got a ‘g’day, how’re you doing’ from Robert Plant.

I went to the 1972 Kooyong Concert re-enactment at the Corner Hotel last year with a number of my peers and some younger kids who have kept the LZ flame burning. There were about 50 of us there who had been at the original concert and it was great to share the experience – I took my collection of about 40 photos to show around and they were a great hit.

The band included Ash Naylor on guitar,  with vocalistsDave Gleason, Vika Bull whose rendition of my very favourite LZ track ‘Since I’ve been loving you’ was truly inspired, and  many others with whom I am less familiar. There was a killer drummer too, complete with a Bonzo like bowler hat. They all played and sang superbly the entire set list as it was in ’72 in tribute to that amazing concert – but it wasn’t quite Led Zeppelin.

I now live in Hawthorn and often drive past the Kooyong Tennis Centre on Glenferrie Road with a big smile on my face and Led Zeppelin playing far too loud for a 63 year old on my car stereo as I remember that awesome, windswept and rainy afternoon so very long ago.

...

Thank you, Chris, for your wonderful story of your experience at the Led Zeppelin concert at Kooyong Stadium. That particular concert, in my opinion, would have to be the best concert I had attended in the 1970s (and I had been to a lot during that period!)

3UZ TOP 40

The 3UZ Top 40 was released on November 29, 1969.

WIKIPEDIA :

3UZ was founded by electrical engineer Oliver John Nilsen CBE, who was later to become a Lord Mayor of Melbourne. Known as "O.J.", Nilsen had created an electrical business, Oliver J. Nilsen & Co. (later Oliver J. Nilsen (Australia) Ltd) in 1916, manufacturing electric jugs, kettles, toasters, crystal sets and radios.

On 6 February 1925 Nilsen was granted a broadcasting licence and in March 3UZ commenced operations as "The Voice of Victoria" from 45 Bourke Street. Keith Cooke was engaged as chief announcer, and first night artists included Leslie Dobson, George Cowley, Dulcie Cherry, and Gertrude Hutton. After the launch, Listener-In magazine remarked that the station :

"... has received many favourable comments from Tasmania, South Australia and New South Wales, and many remote country districts in Victoria on its transmission."

3UZ had Victoria's first "B-class" licence, permitting it to broadcast paid advertisements. At the time, other stations were dependent on subscriptions. In 1929, 3UZ along with 3DB participated in experimental television broadcasts using the Radiovision system.

Originally on a frequency of 930 kHz, 3UZ later moved to 927 kHz in 1978 with the implementation of 9 kHz spacing on the AM band.

For the next sixty years the station achieved consistent top ratings as "The Greater 3UZ", with stars including Stan "The Man" Rofe, ], John McMahon, Cliff "Nicky " Whitta, Graham Kennedy, Happy Hammond, Allan Lappan, Don Lunn, Ken Sparkes, John Vertigan, Neil Thompson, Don Lane and Bert Newton.
