ALIEN NATION : DARK HORIZON

Here is an advertisement for the VHS product of the science fiction drama television movie, Alien Nation: Dark Horizon (1994). Alien life form comes to Earth to rescue his enslaved race. Yeah, I know. a theme has been done to death, however I thought that this TV series and movies were well done in terms of good characterization and stories. Director: Kenneth Johnson.

ARTWORK BY IAN KENNEDY

Ian Kennedy is one of my favourite UK comic book artists. I have so many UK comics, covering several decades to the present, featuring his dynamic artwork.  Much of his work is mostly on the theme of War however he has done science fiction, spy & espionage, adventure strips. You can find out more about Ian Kennedy by going to Wikipedia website … http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Kennedy_(comics)

Kennedy (born September 22, 1932, Dundee, Scotland), although in semi-retirement, he  continues to draw covers and features for Commando comics, published by D. C. Thomson & Co. Ltd.

Recently I came across some of his artwork promoting the annual RAF Leuchars  Battle of Britain Air Show 1987...

NEWTON COMICS

In 1975 Newton Comics started publishing Marvel comics reprints, including Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Avengers, Incredible Hulk and an edition of Planet of the Apes. The first Newton Comics titles were issued in May 1975, accompanied by a massive marketing campaign. The heavy promotion initially paid off with sales of up to 30,000 recorded for the first issues, dropping to around 20,000 for the second and third issues. After a few months sales had dropped to 6,000-8,000 per issue. It soon became apparent that sales projections were grossly overestimated, with print runs being too high and returns from newsagents being substantial. By the end of 1976, Newton Comics was defunct. MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN

Here is an advertisement of the comic character Mandrake The Magician. The Ad was featured at the back of the Phantom comic (Issue 950, 1990), published in Australia by Frew Publications. Frew was hoping that with the huge success of publishing the Phantom that they may kindle the same interest with the buying public to the comic character Mandrake. Not the case sadly.

THE PHANTOM MERCHANDISE

There has always been merchandise associated with the Phantom comic strip character. I remember, back in the early sixties, my brother purchased a Phantom ring which had a rubber face of a skull that you dip into a stamp ink pad and, of course, you then apply the ring and paste it on a surface and it leaves an imprint of a skull.

Back in 1990, there were other merchandise available, such as T-Shirts, Belts and Buckles, chinaware and glassware.

Featured in the Phantom comic, Issue 946, published in Australia by Frew Publications, are advertisements of Phantom merchandise.

BRONX by ALBERTO SAICHANN

Eternity Comics (USA) describes their comic release, Bronx, in 1991, as follows :

New York is not a nice place to live. And in Alberto Saichann’s Bronx, it’s not even a nice place to visit. In short, it’s a helluva town and if you’re looking for trouble this is the best place to find it! Direct from Argentina, Bronx is a collection of vignettes and short stories by the brilliant Saichann. Told in a gritty neo-realistic style that crosses Frank Miller with Will Eisner and Jordi Bernet (I’m sure I don’t have to explain who they are!), Bronx is sure to kick with everyone out there!

“Gritty” is not the word I would use, “confrontational” is more like it. The stories are quite violent, ‘not for the faint-hearted’ as they say, however the stories do hold one’s attention and if you are a ‘connoisseur’ of international comics there is much appreciate in story-telling and illustrated art. Alberto Saichann’s art is new to me but I am going search out more of his material. I am aware that he has worked for Marvel Comics (Punisher: Return to the Big Nothing, Punisher War Zone) and DC Comics (Looney Tunes). And, after a quick Google search just now, Saichann has produced art for the British comic Starblazer. I will have to check my collection of that title real soon!

SUPERBOY ANNUAL

I wasn't a great fan of Superboy, that youthful incarnation of Superman. The very early stories of Superboy were, to me, really just fluff pieces of comic fiction, not to be taken too seriously, and not to add to the continuity of the Superman character. And don't get me started on my opinion of Krypto and Superbaby. okay!

Here is an advertisement, published by National Comics, the earlier name to DC Comics, in 1964, of the first issue of the Superboy Annual....

STAR TREK VHS TAPES ON SALE

A local Opportunity Shop (or ‘thrift’ shop) advertised on Facebook today that they have a collection of 50 VHS tapes of Star Trek which are on sale for only $20.00. VHS cassette tapes are well and truly gone by the wayside in terms of technology, similar to music cassette tapes. I guess by the end of the day, the Op Shop will probably give them away for free or simply throw them out in the rubbish bin even though the tapes are probably in very good condition.

I recently purchased a very good software package that transfers VHS tape content to digital computer files but I wouldn’t bother transferring Star Trek material to digital format as the time in doing this is time consuming, and the quality would not be as good as compared to what you can buy on DVD format, or more so, now as digital downloads.

PAMELA COLMAN SMITH - REMARKABLE "VISIONS" OF MUSIC : "AUTOMATIC" IMPRESSIONS

“Pamela Colman Smith (16 February 1878 – 18 September 1951), also nicknamed Pixie, was an artist, illustrator, and writer. She is best known for designing the Waite-Smith deck of divinatory tarot cards (also called the Rider-Waite or the Rider-Waite-Smith deck) for Arthur Edward Waite.” …Wikipedia

“ … Pamela Colman Smith, is probably unique, for not only does she actually see music whilst it is played, but, being an exceptionally talented artist, she is able to set down instantly the strange and exquisite pictures that appear before her as she listens. Smith is not a musician – in fact, she knows nothing whatever about music, nor does she play upon any musical instrument – but she feels music so intensely that the sounds really take shape before her eyes. …” … The London Illustrated News, 12 February, 1927

Below is an in-depth study of Pamela Colman Smith. 'Music Made Visible' - 'The "Shapes" of Famous Music as seen by an artist' - 'Remarkable "Visions" of Music : "Automatic" Impressions.

If you wish to obtain the original pages from the Illustrated London News so that you can read the whole feature, please contact me as I am willing to sell the tabloid pages for only $15.00 (plus p&h).

John Weeks …  johnweekstraveller@gmail.com

By the way, Pamela Colman Smith, in this day and age, would most likely be described as a ‘synesthete”

“Synesthesia (also spelled synæsthesia or synaesthesia; from the Ancient Greek σύν syn, "together", and αἴσθησις aisthēsis, "sensation") is a neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. People who report such experiences are known as synesthetes.” …. Wikipedia
