H. G. WELLS' VIEWS ON WOMEN

I came across this 1939 article by Francis Keith, published in the Australian publication Woman's World, in which he investigates the views of author H. G. Wells (War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, etc) on the subject of women. It is a fascinating analysis, particularly in light of the 1939 period

SUPERMAN MOVIE POSTER 1954

This movie was released one year after I was born. As a child, I do remember the black & white TV series, which probably influenced me greatly in the comics genre.

Description of the Poster :
Superman's Peril (20th Century Fox, 1954). Australian Daybill (13.5" X 30").
George Reeves is the Man of Steel on this stellar piece. Also featuring the talents of Noel Neill and Jack Larson, the film was comprised of three episodes from The Adventures of Superman television series.

STAR WARS : THE DARK EMPIRE

Here's a 1994 advertisement of the Dark Horse comic publication, Star Wars : Dark Empire II, a six-issue miniseries. The artwork is by Cam Kennedy, one of my favourite comic artists of the UK. Kennedy is Scottish born. He is best known for his work on 2000 AD, especially comic heroes Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper but his artwork covers anthing from science fiction, war stories (particularly in the British comics Battle and Commando), literary fiction masterpieces. For more details on Cam Kennedy, check out the Wikipedia site : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cam_Kennedy

PHANTOM COMICS IN INDIA

Last night, I went to the Oxford Books shop in Kolkata in India, and I was delighted to see that the shop sold comics (not many but an interesting selection). I purchased a couple comics [cover of the titles soon to be scanned for this blog], published in India. I also pleasantly suprised to see a nice collection of The Phantom comics on sale. I was very temped to buy some of these however I am conscious of my luggage weight limitations on the return plane to Australia. Here is a photo of the Phantom comics on display in Oxford Books....

JOURNEY INTO SPACE : THE RETURN FROM MARS

BBC Radio Collection - Dramatisation : Fiction & Drama - Contains 2 Cassettes - Running Time 2 Hours approx.

The final, classic science fiction adventure with Jet Morgan and his crew, together with a special feature about Charles Chilton's popular 1950s series.

It's an ordinary afternoon at London Landing Control. Suddenly, a voice breaks across another aircraft's frequency : 'This is the spaceship Discovery'. To the controller's astonishment, Captain Jet Morgan and his crew are re-entering the Earth's atmosphere - more than thirty years after they have gone missing, presumed dead. So what has happened to the crew during those years! Why didn't they return straight to Earth after stopping the Martian invasion?

Well, says Jet, consulting his diary, about eight months later they managed to escape the asteroid where they were prisoners. And that's when it all started to go wrong ...

Jet and the crew's thrilling adventure is paired with a special half hour feature Journey Into Space ... Again. With the help of several excerpts from the original crew's first mission, Charles Chilton, Andrew Faulds and David Jacobs look back at the phenomenally successful Journey Into Space, the last drama series to beat television in the ratings.

ARTWORK OF ROY BRISBANE

A lot of early women's magazines here in Australia featured excellent illustrations to their fiction pages. One of the artists that I particularly like is Roy Brisbane. Unfortunately I don't have much information about him. A Google search left me with no information. If anyone has some information or internet links for me to follow, I would be most appreciative.

The following three illustrations were featured in the Woman's World, 1 February 1939, under the fiction story 'Test' by Alan R. Downie:

THE LONE RANGER

Title : The Lone Ranger
Author : Fran Striker

Published date : 1977, by Everest Books Ltd in Great Britain

As stated in the book :
For almost 50 years now, the public has thrilled to the marvels and adventures of the Lone Ranger and his trusted Indian companion, Tonto. Here, for the first time in paperback, is the first of the Lone Ranger stories, originally published in hardcover in 1938 and based on the famous radio series.

Story :

The Night Legion!

The valley seemed an eerie place, with only the soft clump of hoofs to break the deathlike stillness. The Lone Ranger and Tonto felt a foreboding of evil, something unexplainable in the air. Yet there was no sound. The horses, too, felt it. Though no command was given, they slowed their pace until they barely moved. A shaft of light struck down as the moon broke through the clouds for a moment. The Lone Ranger bolted upright, pulling on Silver's reins. The pale light reflected from the face of a man directly ahead and slightly above the Lone Ranger. It was a distorted face, with wide-staring eyes, and open mouth. A dead man! He was hanging from a branch above the trail. Another victim of the Night Legion ...

CARTOON BY ALEX GRAHAM

Most people are familiar with the comic strip Fred Basset, about a male basset hound. The cartoon was created by Scottish cartoonist Alex Graham. As a kid I really enjoyed reading the adventures of Fred Bassett in the local newspaper The Sun. The strip was published first in the Daily Mail on 8 July 1963, and it is still being syndicated around the world. Sadly Alex Graham is no longer with us, he died in 1991. Here is an early cartoon he produced for the UK magazine Punch, dated 20 July 1955, well before he created the strip Fred Bassett.

RED DEVIL DEAN [1955]

I've had a keen interest in comics for about 50 years now, and my passion for this illustrated artform is as strong as it was when my elder brother Michael first gave me, as a kid, a big parcel of comics (Marvel, Gold Key, Dell, DC) in the early 1960s. Comics have changed a lot over the years, with better production values etc however I still get excited by the comic strips of decades ago, and learning more about the creators involved. Currently I am reading an old UK publication, Punch, dated 1955, which, to my surprise, there was a small news bulletin (under the feature column Charivaria) mentioning a brand new comic strip that has been published. The strip is titled Red Devil Dean, a strip that I am unfamiliar with. So, I did a Google search on the title and, lo and behold, I discover various websites with details of the strip and the creators involved. Terrific stuff!! ... Ah yes, I love the internet for opening up new delights to fulfill my passion of the wonderful world of comics.

.. This news bulletin was featured in the magazine Punch, dated 20 July 1955.

When only the best will do.

CD Liner Notes :

Tony Flynn has been playing Classical guitar and keyboards since the age of 15. He started life as a composer writing music and songs in a variety of styles, including Popular and Classical. In 1981, together with another musician, he wrote, recorded and distributed an album of songs and music called 'Magick'.

In 1985 he set up a small recording studio from which he began writing for audio-visual and corporate videos. Since then he has moved his studio into larger and better premises and operates under the name of 'Ariel Musick'.

Some credits to his name include a tongue-in-cheek horror film called 'Revenge Of Billy The Kid', 'Galleria' a science fiction film short for the BBC and various documentary programmes.

The title 'Themes Of Light And Darkness' was inspired by a science fiction novel by Roger Zelazny called 'Creatures Of Light And Darkness'.

The Book delved deep into the cloisters of the mythological world where ancient beasts, gods, goddesses, deities and elementals live out an eternal drama depicting the forces of nature.

This age-old struggle between good and evil, light and darkness, Christ and Anti-Christ, George and the Dragon, David and Goliath, angels and demons, even Batman vs Joker, is an expression of the creative universe that we live in, that is the creativity we are not aware of until someone writes it down, paints, speaks or plays it thereby giving it a body to exist in.

Like Roger Zelaney's novel, this is what I have tried to do in a musical form. However, unbiased and without favouritism this all sounds, I do believe that the angels get the better of the demons ... in the end.

[ Source : Wikipedia ]

And thousands of times the Probe had helped him grope his way back to the eternal search. ... The search for Life. ... Home Planet was eons in the past - there would be nothing left there. Yet the galaxies and the Abyss yawned vast. And empty. Sterile. It was this that drove Adamson to despair. ... The Probe felt Adamson's desperation as his own. IRON MAN COVER ON SALVATION ARMY MAGAZINE 'WARCRY'

Whilst fossicking around the Opportunity Shop, operated by the religious organisation, The Salvation Army, I was interested in the cover of their magazine Warcry [dated 27.4.2013]. The main article of the magazine was titled 'What's Beneath The Suit - Do you know who you are or are you trying to cover the real you?'.
